Meet Ally!

Ever since I can remember, I have been insecure about being fair skinned.  My earliest memory is participating in sports and different activities that required showing my legs, and I always had the lightest complexion out of the group.  Not just my peers, but even the coaches would remark at how pale I was.
In my teenage years, my insecurities lead me to an unhealthy decision to visit a tanning bed.  Many of my friends were doing it, and I almost felt like I had to compete to keep up.  It had quick results, and at last, no more comments about my pale skin!  I was finally feeling good about myself, but I always pushed knowing that it was not good for me to the back of my mind.  Especially since my father was diagnosed with Melanoma in his early adult years, I was always worried about what damage the tanning bed would do to my skin too.
Finally, my worrying caught up with me.  One day in my early twenties, I felt a tingly sensation in my right arm.  I didn’t see anything unusual, but something told me I needed to see a dermatologist anyway.  During my visit, the dermatologist actually did not find anything wrong with my arm but instead found three spots on my back that required immediate biopsies.  I had absolutely no idea that they would conduct the biopsy on the spot, but they did and I had to go back to work to worry some more.
A couple of weeks went by, and I was told I could call to follow-up if I had not heard back on the results.  They told me that two of the areas biopsied were considered what they call precancerous and required further removal.  Of course, I was both upset and relieved at the same time.
The surgery was completed shortly after, and after many stitches and an infection later, I still have scars on my back from the removal.  It was then that I decided I would kick my tanning bed habit.  My dermatologist even recommending spray tanning as an alternative, as the members of her staff did it regularly and always looked fantastic.
From then on, I purchased a spray tanning package, started to be more consistent about using sunscreen during outdoor activities, and really began to be cognizant about my skin and potential problem areas.
At 26 and pregnant, I had a second scare with cancer.  After talking about a suspicious spot on my back with my Spray Tan Guru, Molly, I decided I needed to go back to the dermatologist to get checked out.  This visit was even more worrisome, as I could not imagine how difficult it would be if something was wrong with me and how it would affect my future son and husband.  During the visit, I had 3 more spots biopsied on my back and set up an additional appointment to remove a tiny spot on my chin.  Waiting for the results seemed like an eternity, but I learned that all of the spots were free of cancer.  The spot on my chin was considered precancerous, but it was removed entirely during the earlier appointment.
It is not a bad thing at all to care about your appearance, but it is important to always maintain it in a healthy way.  I am thankful that I am on the right track now and can share my story and educate others on the importance of healthy skin!

Our Location

Recently, there has been some frustration from clients about finding our location. I agree that these frustrations are valid! Sunkissed is the kind of a place that if you don't know its there, you just don't know. But do you know what? I kind of LIKE it that way! Sure, if I had Berlin G visibility and threw up various signs I could have a lot more walk- in traffic but I actually like the discreet location and feel it best serves YOU! We are able to have a bit more privacy and sometimes that can be nice when you are most likely walking out with no makeup on and no bra! Lol! So for those of you who are considering making an appt here's how to how to find us. :)
We are located in the back of 9Round Gym (which is in the same building as Buffalo Wild Wings) Simply park on the right side of the building (we have a couple Sunkissed parking spots back there) and walk to the back door of 9Round (that faces Berlin G). You will notice our sign on the door and may come on in and have a seat! Also, please feel free to text or call if you have any questions about finding us! ~Molly 843-696-5047

New Hours!!

As some of you may know I recently quit my job as an Esthetician that I held for 5 years. It was not an easy choice as I love everything about the profession, my co-workers and my CLIENTS! However, I just didn't think I could make it through a third prom season doing both! So, I am putting all of my efforts into making Summerville ladies SUNKISSED! :)
With this change, I am able to be more available and so have set new hours. Please keep in mind that I still prefer to do "By Appt Only" so these hours stated are simply time frames that you can go online and choose a time to come in. If it says 1-6 it doesn't necessarily mean I will be there from 1-6 if no one has scheduled for that day. I tried to make hours based on everyone needs in the past but obviously will always do my best to accommodate and serve you all. :)

Monday---1-6
Tuesday---1-6
Wednesday---1-8
Thursday---1-8
Friday---1-7
Saturday-9-1
Sunday-CLOSED

*As busier days fill up I will extend hours as needed. Just check out the online scheduler!

May: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

5/29/2013

With May almost over it's time to get ready for the strong sun rays! Obviously, we want to avoid the damaging rays as much as possible but understand that going out on the boat, gardening and other outdoor activities are simply part of the southern life. We all know how important re-applying SPF is and remind you to check out the expiration date on your sunscreen bottles as they usually are only stable for up to 3 years. (Hopefully, you are re-applying and don't ever hold on to them that long!) :)
Here at Sunkissed its important to us that everyone understands that spray tans do NOT provide any kind of SPF. Without SPF you are exposed to the same amount of damaging rays with or without a spray tan. In lieu of May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the hottest months of the summer awaiting us we are reminding you of how to know when its time to go get that weird mole looked out! Check out the ABC's below!

A-Asymmetry (If the mole or spot in question is asymmetrical)
B-Border (If the mole or spot in question has irregular or jagged borders)
C-Color (If the mole or spot in question is irregular in color or has multiple colors)
D-Diameter (If the mole or spot in question is as big or bigger than a pencil eraser)
E-Evolution (If the mole or spot in question has changed at all)

If you are experiencing any of these we urge you to seek a Board Certified Dermatologist!

The Dark Side of Spray Tanning

4/20/2013

Just yesterday we had a young girl come into Sunkissed who had a spray tan gone wrong. (No, we did not do it!) She had gone to a facility with a booth and had come to us for help. After tan remover and various scrubs and enzymes her hands lightened a bit and we were able to even some of her color out to look more blended. She was very fair and said she went to the booth because she was afraid to have someone see her naked.
*Moral of the Story: Unless you are already dark toned it's probably not a good idea to go to a booth.
I understand the good thing about them is that no one has to see you nude or even partially nude which for some of us is an extremely vulnerable position. The bad thing is there is no one to make sure the tan is going on evenly and in all the right places! I'm going to say for the record---HAVE NO FEAR LADIES! We are truthfully not looking at your bodies in judgement when we are spraying you. We are looking for evenness, adjusting the lighting in all possible directions to make sure that line is only a shadow, etc...You get the point.
Even though I have been sprayed many times in my life when it came down to having one of my employees (and friend) do it I was rather nervous. I think she knew I was nervous so when she began she complimented my cute underwear which made me laugh and loosen up. We all have insecurities and things we would like to change about ourselves but one thing I have learned is that no matter the flaw, it always looks better with a tan!~

Why Spray Tan?

4/1/2013

In trying to get the word out about Sunkissed Spray Tans I have noticed there is still a lot of hesitation from folks who have or know someone who has had a negative experience. These are a few of the things I hear and you will probably recognize as things you may have said yourself.

1. "It will make me orange."

Yes, unfortunately some spray tanning solutions will turn you into an oompa-loompa. This may sound weird but SunFX is a green-based solution unlike some other brands that may have orange or pinkish undertones. Now, because a lot of folks are concerned with this issue many companies are jumping on the green-based bandwagon because it gives such a natural, bronzed effect.

2. "It doesn't last very long."

On average spray tans can last 5-7 days. It all depends on how WELL you take care of it. We always provide you with a post care sheet of how to properly take care of your tan to prolong the life of it. This includes things like staying moisturized, avoiding exfoliation, etc...I personally have clients that are able to get up to 10 days with their tans.

3. "It looks fake-people are NEVER naturally that tan."

There are some companies (and clients) out there that think the darker the better but at Sunkissed we promote a healthy, realistic looking tan. We have various solution shades that we choose for different skin tones so that you do look natural! Of course, if you want to be super dark we can do that but our goal is to make you look natural and healthy. :)

4. "Don't need it-I'm already using the tanning bed."

(What I want to say) "Ok, that's cool. How do you feel about losing part of your pretty face to melanoma at age 45?" (what I really say) "Do you know how bad that is for your skin? It breaks down your collagen and elastin which makes you look older and not to mention on average 1 person dies every hour from melanoma." I'm an advocate for constantly educating clients about the the dangers of ultraviolet rays but sometimes it still doesn't work. There will always be folks who won't give it up and there is simply no convincing them. Sometimes, it takes a family member being diagnosed or they wake up one morning, look in the mirror and notice those fine lines or sunspots that came up overnight. For old or new believers its not too late to get your healthy glow on.

5. My friend got it in her mouth!

There are a couple different ways to administer spray tans. Booths being 1 kind. This is where you go stand in a booth and the machine sprays you down. You have to turn around and are in charge of making sure your hands are turned the right way, hold your breath at the right time, knees are bent, etc...The other way (how Sunkissed does it) is with a spray tanning gun. A person administers this tan and not just a blind machine. Instead of YOU being in charge of your tan like the booth, WE are in charge of your tan and that makes it much more customizable. We are able to adjust the intensity of spray to better blend certain areas of your body including hands and feet and forewarn you before spraying your face so you don't have to worry about getting solution your mouth.

As you can see, spray tanning has advanced over the years and we are excited to be a part of that revolution. And remember-Instead of going off of others opinions, call or email us and we will be happy to answer any questions for you with updated information!

Our Story

4/1/2013

There have been many times over the course of my 5 year marriage that my husband has said "Why don't you go lay in the sun Mol? You are always happier when you have a little color." 7 years ago he wouldn't have had to even ask because I worked in a tanning salon and was always brown but after going to school for Esthetics (skincare) this statement is like asking me to SIN! My reply would always be, "Do you want me to look good now or when I'm 50??!"

Well, now that I have opened Sunkissed I have found a solution for both myself and my clients who are struggling with "embracing their whiteness". We deliver an all natural bronzing solution to the skin that will develop into a beautiful, glowing tan. Remember, that prevention is key and that Sunscreen and Spray Tans should be your best friends this summer! :)
